The government may expand the chip design initiative beyond startups to include large corporations.
According to Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on the sidelines of the SemiconIndia 2023 conference, industry has suggested that the Future Design Linked Incentive Scheme be opened up to large Indian and overseas enterprises.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on July 29 that the government is considering expanding a subsidy scheme for semiconductor design startups to cover larger enterprises.

“One suggestion has been made that the design side not be limited to startups.” If a large Indian or international business wishes to perform chip design in India, we should allow the future design program to accommodate them as well. So I’m looking into that,” the minister said on the sidelines of the SemiconIndia 2023 conference in Gandhinagar.
“We could say that as long as the intellectual property is Indian, anyone with an original chip design can apply, and we will look into financially supporting it,” the Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Electronics and Information Technology continued.
Over a five-year period, the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme aims to provide financial incentives as well as design infrastructure support for various stages of development and deployment of semiconductor design(s) for Integrated Circuits (ICs), Chipsets, System on Chips (SoCs), Systems & IP Cores, and semiconductor linked design(s).
With a $10 billion subsidy package, India is also attempting to persuade large semiconductor manufacturers to build up chip fabrication and assembly operations in the nation.Within the next decade, China will become a worldwide player in semiconductors.
“With the capital provided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we intend to establish a robust, vibrant, and globally competitive presence in the global semiconductor ecosystem over the next ten years.” We absolutely want to achieve what countries to our north tried for 200 billion dollars in 30 years and failed.
“The Future is Bright, and India is the Future in the Semiconductor Ecosystem,” the minister stated during his speech in Gandhinagar.
During Modi’s recent visit to the United States, semiconductor giant Micron announced plans to build a $2.7 billion assembling unit in the country. According to estimates, the Centre and the state government of Gujarat will cover 70 percent of the project’s cost in the form of subsidies.
The minister emphasized how India has developed worldwide collaborations with other countries, notably Japan and the United States, in crucial sectors of technology such as semiconductors. He stated that key visits and agreements between India and other countries had occurred in the last 15 months, signifying significant milestones.
“This is not a race for instant gratification.” “This is about putting together a mahaul,” he said to reporters on the sidelines.
“We have a long history of instilling cynicism and skepticism in a community that should be optimistic about investing.” That is not a trivial thing to fix. So we accomplished that in 15 months. So there was a big mountain to climb and overcome,” he remarked.
