The UK Data Protection Commission will investigate the Worldcoin cryptocurrency project, according to a report.
The UK’s data regulator announced on Tuesday that it will investigate Worldcoin, a project led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in which users offer iris scans in return for digital identification and free bitcoin.
“We note the launch of WorldCoin in the UK and will be making further enquiries,” said a spokeswoman for the Information Commissioner’s Office, according to Reuters.
Worldcoin began on Monday with two million users from its pilot, with the crypto project growing up eyeball-scanning operations in 20 nations, including sites in London.
The Worldcoin project, described on its website as a “new identity and financial network,” assigns those who sign up a digital ID that it claims would identify humans from artificial intelligence online.
According to the website, its cryptocurrency, known as the Worldcoin token, will be given to users who sign up in certain countries.
The Worldcoin token initially soared after its introduction on Monday, reaching a high of $3.30 before falling to $2.01 on Tuesday, according to market tracker CoinGecko.
