Scindia asks airlines to be more punctual
New Delhi: Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia asked airlines to improve their on-time performance at a recent review meeting.
Scindia also instructed the Airports Authority of India to review technical specifications at airports equipped with visual flight rules (VFR) to help improve punctuality. Flight to VFR airports generally require clear weather conditions or visual references.
Low-cost carrier SpiceJet has had a poor punctuality record since October, when it was the least punctual airline with an on-time performance of 58.1%, according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. IndiGo was the top performer that month, with 88.5% of flights on time.
Akasa Air has been the most punctual airline this month (as of 12 Dec) with 87.1% of flights on time, while SpiceJet was the least punctual with just 51.1% of flights on time.
Sky-high air fares
Speaking about high air fares on some routes, the minister said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has set up a tariff monitoring unit to routinely monitor airfares on randomly selected routes.
Airlines have also been asked to submit their aircraft induction and deployment plans for the next six months. The government pushed the airlines to expand international connectivity to tier-2 and tier-3 destinations, especially from the upcoming airport at Ayodhya, the civil aviation ministry said.
In a separate advisory-group meeting, the minister urged the leaders of aerospace manufacturing majors to present a collaborative plan outlining what they need from each government department to expand their supply chains in India.
