PayPal Launches PYUSD, a USD-Backed ERC20 Stablecoin, in Partnership with Paxos
By supporting frictionless conversion and controlled transactions with a USD-backed stablecoin, PayPal advances the boundaries of digital currency. PayPal has announced the release of PayPal USD (PYUSD), a stablecoin that is pegged to the dollar and represents the substantial transition away from fiat currencies.
The potential of fully-backed, fully-regulated stablecoins to alter payments in web3 environments and other digitally native settings is expanded by this breakthrough, which was directly disclosed by PayPal.
The announcement follows reports that the project’s advancement had halted in February. The company is investigating a stablecoin, a company official told Bloomberg at the time.We will, of course, collaborate extensively with the appropriate regulators if and when we decide to move forward.
What is PYUSD? PayPal USD
PYUSD offers a one-to-one redemption for U.S. dollars and is fully guaranteed by U.S. dollar deposits, U.S. Treasuries, and similar cash equivalents. The business also stated that clients in the United States will be able to purchase the stablecoin.
Additionally, it looks that PYUSD may become the native token of PayPal’s cryptocurrency business with no “spread” imposed on the exchanges, according to the parameters specified in the statement.
“We will disclose an exchange rate and any fees you will be paid for the transaction when you buy or sell cryptocurrencies, including when you pay with cryptocurrency during a transaction. The exchange rate for currencies other than PayPal USD includes a spread that PayPal makes on each transaction. Hawaii does not support PayPal USD.”
PayPal’s president and CEO, Dan Schulman, acknowledged the need for a reliable, digitally native instrument that could be easily coupled to fiat money and reaffirmed the company’s dedication to innovation and compliance.
“Our track record of providing our customers with innovative experiences provides the foundation required to contribute to the growth of digital payments through PayPal USD,” says the statement.
PayPal USD intends to bridge the gap between fiat and digital currencies for customers, merchants, and developers as an ERC-20 token released on the Ethereum network.
The new stablecoin is anticipated to speed up value transfers, enabling direct payments to developers and artists, and encourage multinational corporations’ ongoing investment in digital assets. Additionally, PayPal USD will work in web3-specific contexts, and Venmo support is soon to follow.
Issuers of PYUSD and transparency
The New York State Department of Financial Services has regulatory control over Paxos Trust business, a fully regulated limited-purpose trust business, which is in charge of managing the issuance of PayPal USD. With the help of this regulatory oversight, PayPal USD reserves are completely backed and the stablecoin can be purchased or traded at a rate of $1 per PYUSD.
Starting in September 2023, Paxos plans to further openness by making a public Reserve Report for PayPal USD available that lists the instruments that make up the reserves.
A public third-party attestation of the worth of PayPal’s USD reserve assets provided by a separate accounting firm in accordance with the standards established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) will complement this report.
The company said it is committed to improving consumer and merchant understanding of cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) as the industry develops, in addition to providing a variety of services that enhance the usefulness of digital currencies.
PayPal’s new stablecoin is a key step toward a more integrated digital economy as the digital payment revolution gains momentum.
