Coinbase Receives NFA Approval for Crypto Futures Trading in the US Amid SEC Legal Battle
Regulatory Milestone Enables Coinbase to Offer Bitcoin and Ether Futures to Retail Customers
The National Futures Association (NFA) has granted Coinbase Global (COIN.O) permission to provide cryptocurrency futures trading to retail consumers in the United States, marking a significant regulatory success for the company. Even though the corporation is being sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), this action represents a significant advancement for the business.
Up until today, Coinbase’s institutional clients were the only ones who could trade cryptocurrency futures. But now that the platform has received recent NFA certification, retail clients can now have direct access to bitcoin and ether futures, creating a new opportunity for investors.
Following the announcement of the NFA clearance, the price of Coinbase’s stock increased favorably, rising by 3% to $81.55. This crucial clearance was given by the National Futures Association, a self-regulatory body recognized by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
In reaction to the NFA’s decision, Coinbase said, “This is a critical milestone that reaffirms our commitment to operate a regulated and compliant business.”
While acknowledging this accomplishment, Coinbase must still contend with a continuing SEC case. The governing authority charged Coinbase with operating illegally in June because it neglected to register as an exchange. Coinbase has openly criticized the SEC in response to this case, and CEO Brian Armstrong has voiced concerns that the SEC’s strategy may hinder innovation and push more American cryptocurrency businesses overseas.
The NFA’s clearance comes nearly two years after Coinbase’s application was submitted, illustrating the lengthy process it took to enter the lucrative market for cryptocurrency derivatives. Nearly 80% of the global cryptocurrency market is made up of derivatives, and leveraged bets on futures and other derivatives are frequently major contributors to market volatility.
According to data firm CCData, trade volumes for crypto derivatives hit an astonishing $1.85 trillion in just July alone.
The platform has the chance to increase its products thanks to Coinbase’s successful regulatory milestone, which also highlights the growing significance of clear regulatory frameworks in the changing bitcoin ecosystem. The balance between innovation and regulatory compliance remains a crucial factor for industry participants as the market continues to develop.
