The regulator has called for adherence to clear labeling of expiry dates and warned of punitive action against non-compliant players.
A primary area of concern for the FSSAI is the sale of food items nearing their expiration. The regulatory body has stipulated that e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms must sell only products that have at least 30% of its shelf life remaining, or at least 45 days before the expiration date.
The rule aims to ensure consumers receive fresh products and prevent potential health risks associated with expired or close-to-expiry items.
In addition to product compliance, the FSSAI has also emphasised the need for training delivery personnel to uphold food safety standards. The authority has directed e-commerce platforms to conduct mandatory training on proper food packaging, segregation, and handling, ensuring that items reach consumers in safe conditions.
The FSSAI also highlighted the necessity of periodic medical tests for delivery staff, aiming to mitigate any potential health risks in the food delivery chain.
