Covid cases in India LIVE updates: 619 cases of sub-variant JN.1 reported from 12 states till January 4
India on Thursday reported 760 new Covid-19 cases as per the health ministry’s data. The total active caseload of the viral disease was logged at 4,423, a decrease of 17 since Wednesday morning. With this, the total count of coronavirus cases in India since its outbreak in January 2020 has reached 4,50,15,896.
Yesterday, two patients in Kerala and Karnataka lost their lives due to Covid. Since 2020, as many as 5,33,373 people have died due to coronavirus infection as per government data.

619 cases of Covid sub-variant JN.1 have been reported from 12 states till January 4. Official sources told PTI that the majority of infected individuals are opting for home-based treatment — indicating mild illness.
199 cases have been reported from Karnataka, 148 from Kerala, 110 from Maharashtra, 47 from Goa, 36 from Gujarat, 30 from Andhra Pradesh, 26 from Tamil Nadu, 15 from Delhi, 4 from Rajasthan 2 from Telangana and one each from Odisha and Haryana.

Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases in India, Odisha has identified two new cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of the virus, as confirmed by a senior official on Thursday.

Two cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in Odisha, a senior official said on Thursday.
The two cases were detected in Sundargarh and Bhubaneswar, while one of the patients has recovered completely and the other is under treatment. Samples that were found to be COVID-positive are being sent for genome sequencing.

Kerala has the highest number of active cases at 1,249 in India, followed by Karnataka at 1,240, and Maharashtra at 914.
Tamil Nadu’s active Covid-19 cases stand at 190, and Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh at 128 each.

On Friday, India’s active Covid cases surged to 761 and 12 patients died in the past 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry data.
Of the 12 fatalities, Kerala reported five deaths, four in Karnataka, two in Maharashtra, and one in Uttar Pradesh, pushing the death toll to 5,33,385, according to the health ministry.
Persistent fatigue in long Covid patients has physical cause: Study
A study has found that the persistent fatigue in patients with long Covid has a biological cause. The study said the biological cause is mitochondria in muscle cells that produce less energy than in healthy individuals.
“We saw various abnormalities in the muscle tissue of the patients. At the cellular level, we saw that the mitochondria of the muscle, also known as the energy factories of the cell, function less well and that they produce less energy,” said Rob Wust, Assistant Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).
“So, the cause of the fatigue is really biological. The brain needs energy to think. Muscles need energy to move. This discovery means we can now start to research an appropriate treatment for those with long Covid,” added van Vugt.

FIR registered for ₹37 cr ‘irregularities’ in Covid centres in Mumbai
Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has registered an FIR for alleged irregularities in civic contracts awarded for setting up jumbo COVID centres in Mulund and Dahisar.
A contractor, vendors, and unidentified Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have been booked for alleged fraud to the tune of ₹37 crore.
As per the complainant, after setting up jumbo centres in Dahisar and Mulund, the contractor handed them over to the BMC and allegedly obtained inflated rents from the civic body.

A single-day rise of 760 new cases of Covid were recorded in the country as two more deaths have been reported in the country in the last 24 hours–one each in Kerala and Karnataka, according to data provided by the Union Health Ministry. Friday’s data is yet to be released.
